Ben Carroll has assumed the role of Premier of Victoria, succeeding Jacinta Allan, who resigned amid the anticipation of a leadership challenge. Allan, before stepping down, endorsed Carroll as her successor, paving the way for his leadership.
In his inaugural move as premier, Carroll announced the initiation of a royal commission to probe alleged corruption within Victoria’s construction industry. Complementing this inquiry, he committed to appointing a special prosecutor who will collaborate with the investigation. Furthermore, Carroll plans to expand the powers of the state’s anti-corruption watchdog to scrutinize the utilization of public funds by private contractors and subcontractors.
Carroll emphasized that his administration would prioritize bolstering public services, supporting law enforcement, and enhancing accountability in public expenditure. He also indicated that his leadership would mark a departure from the approaches taken by previous governments, suggesting a shift in direction for Victoria’s future governance.
This leadership transition occurs just months ahead of the state election, as the Labor party seeks to revitalize its agenda amidst declining poll numbers.
