Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to participate in two “Forever Canadian” rallies in Alberta on October 15 and 16, ahead of a significant referendum on October 19 regarding the province’s future relationship with Canada. These events, organized by former Alberta deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk, aim to rally support for Alberta to remain part of Canada.
The referendum presents voters with questions on constitutional and immigration issues, alongside a pivotal question about staying in Canada or moving towards a future separation referendum. Carney, who hails from Alberta, has emphasized the potential consequences of separation, cautioning that it could lead to a prolonged and uncertain process.
In a Thanksgiving message recorded at his old high school in Edmonton, Carney underscored the importance of national unity and highlighted federal plans for significant projects in Alberta, such as a proposed pipeline to Canada’s West Coast. He advocated for national cooperation as crucial for advancing economic and infrastructure priorities, asserting that Canadians are stronger together amid economic and security challenges.
Alongside Carney’s efforts, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to deliver a speech supporting Canadian unity at a conference in Calgary on October 16. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is also slated to address the event, adding further weight to the campaign to keep Alberta within the federation.
