OpenNebula Systems has launched OpenNebula 7.4 “Helix”, the newest iteration of its open-source cloud and virtualization platform aimed at simplifying enterprise cloud management while addressing the increasing demands of AI infrastructure. The update features a revamped Sunstone management interface that offers a more rapid and user-friendly experience for cloud administrators. Key enhancements include improved navigation, resource inspection tools, reorganized settings, and GUI-based VirtioFS management, all designed to streamline everyday cloud operations.
In addition to user interface improvements, OpenNebula 7.4 bolsters automation capabilities with the introduction of OneSwap for bulk VMware migrations, enhanced OneDRS resource scheduling, intelligent datastore selection, and storage migration. These upgrades, along with improvements to OneKS for managed Kubernetes deployments, assist organizations in modernizing their infrastructure while reducing operational complexity.
The platform also enhances support for AI and high-performance computing workloads by integrating Axelera AI accelerators, native NVIDIA GPU compatibility within the Slurm appliance, and automated Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) orchestration via the NVIDIA Infrastructure Controller (NICo). Networking improvements include VLAN Group-level authorization and support for Open vSwitch Switchdev, which aim to boost performance and ensure secure multi-tenant environments.
Further strengthening its offering, the release enhances backup and data protection through improvements to the OpenNebula Backup Exporter (OneBEX), introduces Selected Disk Backups, and provides production-ready support for Ubuntu 26.04. Additional updates cover storage, monitoring, networking, high availability, and VMware compatibility, making the platform more robust and versatile.
Alongside the platform update, OpenNebula Systems has rolled out OpenNebula Apps (OneApps) 7.4.0, which features updated virtual appliances, AArch64 support for OneKS, Alpine Linux 3.24 compatibility, and deployment enhancements for enterprise cloud environments.
