During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to enhancing Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. Canada has pledged C$350 million (US$253 million) as part of a US-led initiative to supply Ukraine with military equipment, training, and other defense resources. This support arrives as Ukraine endures escalating missile and drone assaults from Russia.
In addition to military aid, Canada will offer C$450 million in loan guarantees to bolster Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing is intended to facilitate repairs to damaged facilities, increase energy storage, and improve electricity supplies to critical services like hospitals.
Carney and Zelenskyy formalized an agreement to explore a “hundred-year partnership” focused on defense, critical minerals, energy, and other collaborative sectors. This long-term cooperation aims to strengthen ties between the two nations across various strategic areas.
Further emphasizing its commitment, Canada announced that 30% of its new domestic drone production would be allocated to Ukraine. Zelenskyy noted that these drones will be deployed on battlefields to support Ukrainian military operations and safeguard civilians.
President Zelenskyy is also anticipated to meet with US President Donald Trump in New York later this month. This meeting could occur on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly as diplomatic efforts continue to reignite negotiations for ending the ongoing conflict.
