Türkiye and Canada have embarked on a strategic partnership designed to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, and security, amid increasing geopolitical uncertainties. Announced during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent visit to Ankara, this new alliance signifies a deepening of relations between the two countries, which have shared diplomatic ties for 83 years and are both members of NATO.
The agreement outlines a three-year action plan centered around four key areas: trade, investment and innovation; energy and climate cooperation; defence and security; and fostering government dialogue and people-to-people relations. This partnership aims to bolster economic ties, encourage investment, and advance projects in energy and emerging technologies, while reaffirming commitments to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
Defence cooperation is a pivotal element of this agreement. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Türkiye’s Presidency of Defence Industries and Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs, focusing on partnerships between the two nations’ defence sectors and exploring new areas for collaboration. Additionally, the leaders committed to promoting peace and security efforts in regions including Ukraine, the South Caucasus, and the Middle East, particularly Gaza.
To facilitate ongoing collaboration, the two countries will establish an annual Türkiye-Canada Strategic Dialogue and will continue convening the Joint Economic and Trade Committee alongside political-military and counterterrorism consultations. The partnership also aims to enhance cooperation in consular affairs, migration, mutual legal assistance, and extradition, while fostering cultural exchanges and connections between citizens and diaspora communities.
The foreign ministers of Türkiye and Canada will oversee the implementation of the action plan to ensure commitments translate into tangible outcomes. This strategic partnership reflects both nations’ ambitions to deepen economic and security ties and address common international challenges, creating new opportunities for businesses, investors, and citizens alike.
