Spotify is taking steps to manage the growing presence of AI-generated music on its platform by implementing new measures to identify and limit the visibility of these artificial artist identities. Starting in September, the streaming service will introduce an “AI persona” label on both artist profiles and track listings for music created by AI. This initiative is designed to help users distinguish between real musicians and AI-generated performers, thereby protecting genuine artists from losing exposure to computer-generated content.
Additionally, Spotify will exclude AI personas from personalized recommendations by default. This decision underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining transparency as generative AI continues to become more prevalent in the music industry. With listeners increasingly interested in whether a track is performed by a human or an AI, Spotify aims to provide clarity and uphold the authenticity of its content offerings.
While artists will have the option to self-disclose their AI-generated status, Spotify will also deploy human reviewers and AI-driven tools to identify any AI personas that have not been disclosed. This dual approach is part of Spotify’s broader strategy to combat the influx of artificial and low-quality content on its platform.
The move comes in response to a significant rise in AI-generated music. Spotify has previously reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks over a one-year period, highlighting the sheer volume of such content entering music streaming services. By addressing this issue, Spotify aims to ensure that quality and authenticity remain at the forefront of its user experience.
