Demi Vollering clinched her second title at the Tour de France Femmes, showcasing her prowess with a decisive attack on the final climbs near Nice. The Dutch cyclist finished 1 minute and 18 seconds ahead of Kasia Niewiadoma, securing her victory. Vollering made her winning move on the Col d’Èze, breaking away from Niewiadoma with approximately 600 meters left on the ascent, despite Niewiadoma’s persistent attempts to gain an edge during the climbs.
The win wasn’t without its controversies. Leading up to the final stage, there was tension between Vollering and Niewiadoma over race tactics during Saturday’s stage. Niewiadoma had accused Célia Gery, a teammate of Vollering, of interfering during a pivotal part of the race, a claim that fueled ongoing discussions between the competitors. Despite the disagreements, Niewiadoma acknowledged Vollering’s formidable performance, emphasizing her desire to compete fairly.
Vollering expressed that her victory was a testament to her team’s deservingness based on their sporting capabilities. Meanwhile, Niewiadoma’s efforts earned her a second-place finish overall, maintaining her impressive streak of podium appearances in recent editions of the Tour.
The final stage also posed challenges for Marlen Reusser, who suffered a crash while descending the Col d’Èze. The Swiss rider, who had started the day in third place overall, saw her position plummet to 14th in the general classification following the incident.
