Alberta is moving forward with plans to establish a high-speed rail system connecting Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary. The provincial government is set to issue a formal request this fall for private companies to submit proposals for the development of the project. Premier Danielle Smith announced that once a private-sector partner is selected, the federal government has agreed to move the project to its Major Projects Office. Alberta anticipates making a selection by April 2027.
The proposed rail line will also feature connections to the international airports in Calgary and Edmonton, enhancing transportation links across the province. This initiative comes as the Edmonton-Calgary corridor, which houses about 80 percent of Alberta’s population, continues to see rapid growth and increasing demand for transportation infrastructure.
In developing the high-speed rail project, consultations will be conducted with Indigenous communities, municipalities, and the public to evaluate the potential costs, benefits, and impacts of the system. This engagement is aimed at ensuring that the project meets the transportation needs of the province while considering local concerns.
As Alberta looks to accommodate its growing population, the high-speed rail project is seen as a significant step in modernizing the province’s transportation infrastructure. By connecting major urban centers and international airports, the system is expected to provide a more efficient and integrated travel option for residents and visitors alike.
