Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged an additional $60 million in aid to Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of international law and global security. This announcement was made during Albanese’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York.
The new assistance package comprises $45 million in Australian Defence Force equipment, $10 million directed towards Ukraine’s energy support fund, and $5 million allocated for humanitarian assistance. With this latest contribution, Australia’s total support for Ukraine, following Russia’s invasion in 2022, will reach approximately $1.9 billion.
Alongside the financial aid, the two leaders signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement designed to bolster military cooperation. This agreement includes provisions for increased military training and the exploration of collaborative efforts in training facilities and the joint production of air-defense systems, missiles, and drones.
Albanese highlighted that the bilateral security agreement would remain valuable beyond the current conflict, serving as a framework for Australia and Ukraine to collaborate during peacetime. This sentiment was echoed by Zelenskyy, who stated the agreement would enhance cooperation in various sectors, including security and trade.
The commitment from Australia underscores its stance on supporting Ukraine amid ongoing global tensions, reaffirming a shared dedication to upholding the principles of international law and collective security.
