Germany and Canada Forge Partnership on Critical Raw Materials

Germany and Canada have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the field of critical raw materials, aiming to reduce reliance on China’s supply dominance. The announcement was made in Berlin during a joint press conference by Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Both countries highlighted the importance of securing alternative sources as China recently imposed export restrictions on certain rare earth elements, sparking global concerns. Rare earths are essential in industries ranging from electric vehicle batteries to wind turbines and advanced electronics.
Merz confirmed that ministers from both nations will sign a memorandum of understanding to boost collaboration on raw materials. He emphasized that the move would not only strengthen economic ties but also improve long-term security and stability of supply chains.
Carney noted that global disruptions — from the Ukraine war to the pandemic — have exposed vulnerabilities in critical mineral supply chains. He added that Canada is ready to play a key role in helping Germany and Europe diversify away from China. Details of the agreement are expected to be disclosed later.
